THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central was in need of a confidence boost.

The Yellow Jackets got it Wednesday against the Cairo Syrupmakers.

Led by Logan Holland’s three doubles and six RBIs, Central torched Cairo 10-1.

“I was telling a couple of (players) today, the great thing about baseball is you just get to get back out there and play again. It’s not like football where you’ve got to sit on it for a week,” said Central coach Chad Parkerson, whose team rebounded from a 6-1 loss on Tuesday to Tift County. “We played well tonight.”

Central scored three runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings en route to its second-biggest scoring output of the season.

“What I was really excited about was we executed the small-ball stuff. (Tuesday night) when we didn’t do the little things right, we did them right (Wednesday),” Parkerson said. “It started with Kris Lee.”

Lee started on the mound for the Yellow Jackets and surrendered just three hits. He fanned five and walked only two.

“Lee mixed it up really well for them,” Cairo coach Ron Best said. “The main thing was he was throwing strikes. When pitchers throw strikes and challenge the batters, a lot of times good things happen for the pitcher.

“We didn’t help ourselves. I think we took a few too many strikes. To his credit, he was in the zone for most of the night.”

Cairo tallied two hits in the first inning, one by Chad Funderburke, which scored Jonathan Moore for the Syrupmakers’ only run.

As Lee was magnificent for the Yellow Jackets, he also had a solid defensive effort behind him.

“We had one groundball that should’ve been caught and one flyball that should’ve been caught, but Kris got us out of it,”Parkerson said. “That’s what you’re on a team for to pick your teammates up.

Outfielder Devyn Newberry had a sparkling dive for a catch in the third inning that robbed Cairo of a hit. At the plate, Newberry went 2-for-3 with three runs. Lee added a pair of hits. Stephen Kirkland delivered two doubles for the Yellow Jackets, who will host Cook on Friday.
